I think that it will always depend what network you are using but I think each has their own set of benefits and drawbacks. Most benefits include the ability to connect all over the world! You are able to connect with friend close and far! With this is also the concern for mental health, promotion of materialism, security concerns ect. With any social media there is a give and take- access to the world and so much information 24/7 is wonderful but does have costs. 

I do not think that there is an "ideal" number of friends or connections that anyone can have on any social media that would improve their mental health. I think it is the quality of friendships that will actually impact your overall mental health. Having deeper connections where you can hold space and be yourself around by people you love will ultimately matter more than any quantifiable number online.

There are a variety of factors that could contribute to negative influences from social media. One of those factors could be the frequency and intensity of usage. Excessive usage has been linked to depression. Another factor could be the content of consumption, perhaps what the user is consuming harmful or negative. Lastly social comparison is a huge negative influence social media can bring. This could lead to negative perception and low self esteem to any individual. 

I think that social networking sites do have some responsibility in regards to promoting mental health to users! I think that one of the most important things is for sites to have complete transparency with users and give clear information on how they operate! I also think that knowing their huge impact on users they provide resources for mental health so that option is open and available to those who wish to seek it.
