The Dress
- Why did you choose this online argument for your assignment?
- Provide three negative examples and concerns you have with this online argument.
- Create five rules for how people should argue online correctly.
One online argument that caused a internet wide debate and argument was the blue and gold dress. There was a viral photo of a dress which some claimed was royal blue and black, and the other side of the internet claimed was gold and white. This sparked quite the argument between platforms. The picture really revealed human color perception. The argument became a who is right and wrong. Both sides refused to change minds and only stuck to the color they perceived. There was a strong unwillingness to see another perspective. This is one of my concerns-the lack to have an open mind. The second concern for me was how hostile the argument got. With name calling and bullying for simply having a different perception of the dress. Calling other sides "stupid" or "liars" based on what they see. The last concern that I have is how large of a scale this became. One small argument over the color of a dress became a mass media event that everyone participated in. For something so small to be so polarizing is concerning.
5 Rules for Respectful Arguing
1. Stay Respectful: Treat others with respect and courtesy, even if you agree. Avoid personal attacks or insults. Focus on the argument or idea rather than attacking the person presenting it.
2. Fact-Check Before Posting: Verify information before sharing it. Misinformation can escalate conflicts and hinder meaningful discussion. Reliable sources can strengthen your argument.
3. Listen and Understand: Take the time to understand the other person's perspective. As
questions for clarification instead of assuming intent or meaning.
4. Keep Emotions in Check: Emotions can run high in online discussions, but try to remain calm and composed. Take a break if needed to cool off before responding. Emotionally charged reaction often hinder rational debate.
5. Focus on Solution or Compromise: Instead of just arguing for the sake of "winning", look for for constructive outcomes. Look for common ground or propose solutions that address concerns form different perspective.
